The L’Arche communities in Canada provide a range of individualized supports that help each person live a meaningful life, develop their abilities, contribute their gifts, and achieve their goals.
The communities vary in size, history and local flavour, yet they have a common spirit of welcome, joy and celebration. Members all share in decision-making, chores, activities and the life of the community as they desire and are able.
The seven L’Arche communities across Western Canada include 28 houses that 112 people with intellectual disabilities and their caregivers call home, as well as 20 semi-independent living units for as many people with an intellectual disability.
These communities offer a range of daytime activities and programs, from making greetings cards and candles to creating videos and projects involving photography, as well as community outings. Their various art projects (some to raise funds),
including a virtual exhibition presented annually, are particularly popular. Another flagship for communities in the West is the social enterprise L’Arche Tova Café, in Winnipeg, that employs people with intellectual disabilities.
