Antigonish, Cape Breton, Halifax, Wolfville, Saint John, Fredericton, and Avalon
The L’Arche communities in Canada provide a range of individualized supports that help each person live a meaningful life, develop their abilities, contribute their gifts, and achieve their goals.
The communities vary in size, history and local flavour, yet they have a common spirit of welcome, joy and celebration. Members all share in decision-making, chores, activities and the life of the community as they desire and are able.
Across three provinces on Canada’s East Coast, the communities in Atlantic Canada are firmly rooted in their local neighbourhoods and cultures. They provide support in various ways to more than 100 adults with intellectual disabilities in homes, apartments, and numerous daytime programs. Our communities are full of artists and innovators who are always looking for new and creative ways to showcase the contributions of people with intellectual disabilities and the transformative power of relationships lived in community.
The L’Arche communities in Antigonish and Wolfville have vibrant relationships with their local universities – St. Francis Xavier and Acadia. In rural Cape Breton, the L’Arche community garden grows organic produce that is sold throughout Inverness County. In the cities of Saint John and Halifax, L’Arche brings the unique experience of shared life in community settings to a diverse urban landscape. And in Fredericton, NB, and St. John’s, NL, groups of dedicated volunteers are bringing the values of L’Arche to new locations as they work to establish L’Arche homes and programs in those cities.
